Excerpt from Success: A Course in Moral Instruction for the High School
This manual is intended to supply material for a year's course in moral instruction in the high school. It is planned with reference to the interests, needs, and intellectual status of the members of the junior and senior classes, particularly the latter. Its appeal is directed, furthermore, to the more thoughtful members of these classes. The course will um doubtedly be given as an elective; presumably also (though I hope not) without credit. In any event, it will be something outside of the ordinary routine. Under these circumstances, it was possible to consider in its preparation solely the question of the condition of its greatest usefulness rather than that of widest popularity. There will accordingly be found here noth ing but materials which may supply a basis for serious work. At the same time, as I believe, this demand for work will be no bar to popularity among the more earnest students, who alone will profit from any course of this kind, however planned.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a course for high school juniors and seniors seeking moral instruction that emphasizes habits of thought, while also assessing the benefits of moral conduct as an end in itself. The author acknowledges that most people focus on the means rather than the end results, but argues that this only leads to nearsighted decision-making. The book begins with guidance on developing intellectual efficiency, reasoning that a well-rounded personality is the foundation for making good choices. Topics include: memory, habits, lying, kindness, forgiveness, wealth, and the nature of success as it relates to happiness. The author argues that while some individuals may have naturally superior minds or bodies, anyone can improve their situation through practice, dedication, and ethical behavior. This book provides thought-provoking questions and discussion topics to encourage young adults to discover their own conclusions regarding how they should live, based on principles of duty and the pursuit of genuine, long-term happiness.
