Sinossi

Excerpt from The Partition and Colonization of Africa

These lectures were given in the first quarter of 1921, at the Royal Colonial Institute, to a study circle of teachers of the London County Council. They do not pretend to cover the whole ground but are designedly somewhat discursive, with the intention of suggesting diverse points of view and a variety of subjects for further study in one direction or another. For the same reason a good many books and papers of different kinds are quoted or referred to. While the lectures have been awaiting publication various developments have taken place in Africa, but it has not been attempted to keep pace with changes which are still in complete by alteration of the text. I am much indebted to Mr. W. S. Tomkinson for very.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating history of Africa, challenging the notion of it as a unified continent prior to the mid-19th century. The author emphasizes that Europeans primarily interacted with Africa through its coastlines, associating different regions with the Mediterranean world, the Atlantic slave trade, or the Indian Ocean trade routes. This exploration of Africa's historical fragmentation sheds light on why it remained largely unknown to Europeans until the age of exploration led by figures like David Livingstone. The author skillfully weaves together geographical, historical, and cultural factors to explain the complexities of Africa's past. The impact of ancient civilizations like Egypt and the Roman Empire on the continent's northern regions is explored, highlighting the enduring legacy of Roman infrastructure and administration. The arrival of Arab and Islamic influences is examined, demonstrating their profound effect on the northern half of Africa. The book also delves into the diversity of Africa's native populations, including groups such as Berbers, Hamites, Semites, and Bantus, dispelling homogenous representations and acknowledging the continent's rich tapestry of cultures. The narrative traces the gradual shift in European engagement with Africa, from initial Portuguese exploration and trade to the competition among European powers for influence and control. The author examines the motivations and methods of European involvement, including the devastating impact of the slave trade. By exploring the historical context of European presence in Africa, the book provides valuable insights into the continent's complex relationship with the wider world and the challenges and opportunities it faces in the present day.
