Sinossi

Excerpt from The Science of Ethics

A preface is generally the most interesting, and not seldom the only interesting, part of a book. It is useful to the hasty critic who wishes to avoid the trouble of reading at all, and to the more serious student who wishes to have the clue to the author's speculations put into his hands at the earliest possible period. I should be glad to be useful to both classes, to save some readers the trouble of getting through more than a couple of paragraphs, and to point out to others what is the kind of result which they may expect from a perusal of the whole work.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex and fascinating realm of ethics, exploring the fundamental principles that guide human behaviour and shape our moral compass. Rooted in the intellectual landscape of the late 19th century, it engages with prominent thinkers like J.S. Mill, Darwin, and Herbert Spencer, building upon their ideas while forging its own unique path. The author embarks on a comprehensive investigation of morality, examining the interplay of emotions, reason, and social influences in shaping our ethical decisions. Concepts such as happiness, utility, and the intricate relationship between individual and societal well-being are meticulously analysed. The book delves into the origins and evolution of virtues such as courage, temperance, and truthfulness, tracing their development within the context of social progress. Central to the discussion is the concept of altruism and its compatibility with self-interest. The author challenges conventional notions of egoism, arguing that genuine benevolence can exist as an ultimate motive for human action. The book also explores the nature of merit, free will, and the role of conscience in guiding moral behaviour. Ultimately, this book offers profound insights into the intricate tapestry of human morality, demonstrating how our ethical principles are intricately intertwined with our biological, psychological, and social evolution. By shedding light on the complex factors that influence our choices and shape our values, it invites us to contemplate the deeper meaning of our actions and strive towards a more just and compassionate society.
