But among all the nations that have appeared on the face Of the earth, there is not one whose history is more remarkable, more replete with interest, than that Of the Jews.
Their history commences with the earliest periods. From among all the nations Israel was the only people whom God selected as his own. Their religious and their civil system were alike sanctioned by Him. Their priesthood was the one priesthood he owned as his, and their kings were rightly named the Lord's anointed their city, the place which he had chosen to put his name there the city Of the Great King; (matt. V. 35) Of which He said, Mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. (2 Chron. Vii.
TO them the Almighty revealed his holy will; them he made the depositories Of his holy law; to them pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving Of the law, and the service Of God, and the promises from their centre rose that light who was to lighten the Gentiles; theirs are the fathers, Of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever.
