In no sense do we wish to decry the technical side of music, for without a mastery of it the most talented musician will quickly find his development restricted. On the other hand, however, it is impossible to bolster up for long any music or musicians having only technical significance. There are many of the large symphonic works by modern composers which are constructed with nothing short of a consummate mastery of technique. In performance they even sound very fine, but there always appears to be something missing. They lack the divine fire that stirs our innermost feelings and lifts us to a more sublime realisation of what music really is.
