Excerpt from Papers and Discussions on Screw Propulsion: Reprinted From Transactions of the Institution of Naval Architects

Next I have to notice the comparative trials of two ships, which ap pear, at the first glance, to contradict our experience in the Royal Navy. Table III gives the facts, for which I am indebted to Mr. Wal ter Brock, of Denny Brothers, Dumbarton. It is understood that the two ships were practically sister ships; they were, I believe, built and engined by Messrs. Napier. The broad facts of the case are as follows: The single screw ship was driven knots, with horse-power, whereas the twin-screw ship only reached knots with horse power. This is certainly a very inferior performance for the twin screw ship. When the table is carefully examined, however, a very curious anomaly becomes apparent: The twin screws have an aggregate disc-area more than 40 per -cent. In excess of the corresponding area for the single screw; there fore one would expect the twin screws to have the less percentage of slip.

Instead of having less slip than the single screw the twin screws have per cent., as against per cent.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate world of 19th-century naval engineering, focusing on the ongoing debate between single and twin-screw propulsion systems for deep-draught ships. The author, a respected Assistant Constructor of the Navy, challenges the prevailing belief that single screws are more efficient. Through meticulous analysis of steam trial data and comparisons of various warships, the author builds a compelling case for the superiority of twin-screw propulsion in terms of power economy, maneuverability, and safety. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving maritime landscape, where technological advancements and the pursuit of superior naval capabilities were paramount. The author's insights into the complexities of screw propeller design, engine performance, and ship resistance shed light on the critical factors influencing the efficiency and effectiveness of naval vessels during this pivotal era. This book offers a unique window into the technical and theoretical considerations that shaped the design and operation of warships in the late 19th century. The author's meticulous research and insightful analysis provide valuable lessons that continue to resonate in the field of naval architecture, highlighting the importance of empirical evidence, rigorous testing, and a willingness to challenge conventional wisdom in the pursuit of progress. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
