Excerpt from The Works of Tobias Smollett, Vol. 8
Supposing this to be the case, it was lucky for the cause of historical truth, that so many pens have been drawn by writers, who could not be suspected of such partiality; and that many great personages, among the ancients as well as modems, either would not or could not entertain the public with their own memoirs. From this want of inclination or capacity to write, in our hero himself, the undertaking is now left to me, of transmitting to posterity the remarkable adventures of Ferdinand Count Fathom; and by the time the reader shall have glanced over the subsequent sheets, I doubt not but he will bless God that the adventurer was not his own historian.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a captivating dive into the life and escapades of the shrewd and enigmatic Ferdinand Count Fathom, an 18th century anti-hero. Fathom is the ultimate unreliable narrator whose charm, wit, and entitlement mask darker motivations. Through a series of intricate and outrageous adventures, the author explores the themes of morality, class, appearances, and truth, all within a fascinating historical backdrop. This book is an enthralling journey that follows an untrustworthy and self-serving character as he navigates the complex social landscape of his time. Along the way, the author forces us to examine our own judgments and assumptions about the nature of good and evil, appearance and reality.
