Excerpt from The Anglo-German Commercial and Colonial Rivalry as a Cause of the Great War: A Thesis Presented to the Department of History, University of Southern California, Los Angeles
That the present war is not due to religious differ ences on the part of the combatants is evident from the fact that Protestant England is in alliance with Cath olic (greek) Russia, and Catholic (roman) Portugal; and the Christian and the Infidel are brothers in arms, fighting each other 's battles in the armies of the Cen tral powers. In the same manner racial animosities and ties are annulled in the fact that German is ar rayed against German and Slav against Slav in the deadly conflict. That dynastic considerations had no influence in precipitating the war is also manifest in the fact that Germany and England, whose royal houses are intimately related through marital ties, are the sorest enemies.

This book explores the rivalry between Great Britain and Germany in the years leading up to the First World War, arguing that the colonial and commercial ambitions of the two nations were a major cause of the conflict. The author traces the rise of Germany as a colonial power and its challenge to the British Empire, examining the economic, political, and ideological factors that fueled the rivalry. The book also analyzes the broader context of European imperialism and the role of other powers, such as France and Russia, in the lead-up to war. Ultimately, this book provides a valuable insight into the complex web of factors that contributed to the outbreak of the First World War and the changing nature of international relations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
