Excerpt from The Riddle of the Tariff
The only explanation which seems necessary of the method of this book concerns the employ ment and the non-employment of statistics in different parts of it. I have made use of them in the first chapter for a special and limited purpose, namely, to controvert certain alarmist opinions about national prosperity, which appear to be widely held. The tables which I have given are not intended, and cannot be used, to prove that 'everything is for the best in the best of all Cobdenite worlds.' A paean of rejoicing requires a broader foundation than figures for single years. I have not aspired to supply the substance of any.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an in-depth analysis of various proposed tariff reforms, aiming to clarify the complexity of the subject for the general reader. The author argues that an examination of national prosperity and imperial unity reveals no urgent need to alter established Free Trade policy. While the author accepts that protective tariffs may create certain benefits for specific industries, he maintains that these come at a greater cost to the overall economy. The book also weighs the arguments for and against tariff bargaining, limited protection, and imperial preference, ultimately concluding that Free Trade remains the most economically sound approach.
