Excerpt from A Practical Inquiry Into the Nature and Extent of the Present Agricultural Distress, and the Means of Relieving It
The present distress of those engaged in agri culture is so oppressive ia its nature, and so intense in its degree, that their complaints re quire no apology; and their lamentations are at least entitled to compassion and indulgence. The question is not, does the evil exist? But, does it any longer admit of relief? If a saving hand cannot now be stretched out to rescue him whom the blow has already stricken to the ground, can it not still avail to avert from other heads the ruin, which to them is as yet only impending?

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book, published in 1822, analyzes the devastating impact of a recent economic depression on the agricultural industry in England. The author, with extensive expertise on the subject, argues that the precipitous decline in wheat prices was not the only factor contributing to the crisis. Rather, many factors interacted in a complex manner to create a situation where farmers were buried under insurmountable financial hardships. The author draws on detailed case studies to demonstrate how a decline in overall income of 30 percent had disastrous effects across the industry, forcing many into bankruptcy and threatening the livelihoods of laborers. The author offers some reform proposals, including governmental intervention to protect the industry from foreign competition and the repeal or reduction of certain taxes, such as those on soap and candles, to alleviate the immediate suffering of the poor. The author does not believe these proposed solutions will totally remedy the situation but hopes they will reduce the severity of the crisis. This book is a powerful indictment of sudden economic shifts and a valuable historical document that provides context for modern economic crises.
