The question, therefore, naturally arises, If this is the disposition of the inhabitants, if they are so universally courteous and hospitable, how shall we explain the policy of isolation which was adhered to till within eight years - a policy which refused to the Chinese, who claimed suzerainty over Corea, the right to a resident, and even compelled an ambassador from the Emperor of China, on the rare occasions when one made a visit, to enter the country with only the scantiest train of attendants The answer to this, as to many other questions, lies in the position of the peninsula between China and Japan.
