Sinossi

Excerpt from The Sacred Tenth, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Studies in Tithe-Giving, Ancient and Modern

HE scheme of the following Studies may be briefly indicated as follows. The opening chapters are intended to show, apart from, and before the existence of, the Bible, that man, from the beginning, recognised it as a duty to offer a portion of his substance to his God; and that the portion so dedicated, throughout the ancient pagan and patriarchal world, was almost invariably a tenth. From the Jews, indeed, payment was required of two tenths in addition to God's tithe, and to these the Rabbis added a fourth, as appears from our studies in the Old Testament, the Apocrypha, and the Talmud. Nor did the Founder of Christianity repeal this Jewish tithing, but, on the contrary, He expressed distinct approval of it.

When Church history on this subject begins, our sections on Catholic or Universal Teaching, Practice, and Legislation testify that the principle of tithing was taught and observed for sixteen centuries throughout the Christian world, including England, until the time of Henry VIII.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating history of tithe-paying, a practice deeply rooted in ancient civilizations. It explores how people across diverse cultures, from the Egyptians and Babylonians to the Greeks and Romans, recognized the duty of offering a portion of their wealth to their respective deities. The author meticulously examines historical records, including cuneiform tablets, temple inscriptions, and ancient texts, to uncover the prevalence and significance of tithing in these societies. Moving beyond antiquity, the book traces the evolution of tithing within the Judeo-Christian tradition. It analyses the Mosaic laws governing tithes in ancient Israel, delves into the teachings of Jesus and the early Church on charitable giving, and examines the practices and legislation of Christian councils throughout history. The author sheds light on the concept of 'alienated tithes' in England, where a significant portion of tithes were misappropriated and transferred to lay ownership, impacting the financial well-being of the Church. The book's exploration of tithing extends beyond its religious implications, delving into its economic, social, and ethical dimensions. It raises thought-provoking questions about wealth distribution, social responsibility, and the role of charitable giving in fostering a just and equitable society. By illuminating the historical and cultural context of tithe-paying, the author invites readers to reflect on the enduring relevance of this ancient practice and its potential to inspire a deeper sense of stewardship and generosity in the present day.
