Excerpt from The Beautiful in Music
F I have ventured to translate Dr. Eduard Hanslick's Vom musikalisch-schonen, I have done SO with a full knowledge of the short comings which every translation must present, and especially one like this, the original of which is so inimitable in style and so thoroughly German in construction, that even far more competent writers than myself would find it difficult, if not impossible, to do complete justice to it. My excuse for under taking so arduous a task must be the desire to introduce to the English reader one of the most remarkable books on musical aesthetics, and one which has deservedly gained a wide reputation among the German-speaking communities. The work is not of recent date, the first edition having appeared close on forty years ago; yet, as is the case with all works dealing with. Principles and not with questions of local on contemporary interest, the fact of its age in no way detracts from its importance. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the heart of musical aesthetics, challenging the long-held belief that music's primary purpose is to represent and evoke emotions. Through meticulous analysis, the author argues that music's true power lies in its ability to express ideas of motion, intensity, and complexity through the artful arrangement of sounds. By exploring the historical and philosophical underpinnings of musical aesthetics, the author exposes the limitations of relying on subjective emotional responses to understand music's beauty. Instead, this book advocates for a more objective approach, focusing on the inherent qualities of musical compositions themselves. This exploration of music's essence reveals a depth and complexity that transcends the mere evocation of feelings. The author demonstrates how music can express abstract concepts like grace, elegance, and vigor through its unique language of sound. Ultimately, this book invites us to experience music in a new light, appreciating its intricate structures and inherent beauty without seeking to impose extraneous meanings or emotional narratives. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
