Excerpt from A Subject-Index Books in the Library: Law Society of Upper Canada at Osgoode Hall, Toronto January 1st, 1900; Compiled Under the Direction of the Library Committee

The present Subject - Index is designed to be a guide to the contents of the Library other than the reports and statutes. In dealing with the legal text-books great pains have been taken to make the Index as serviceable to the profession as possible by, entering each work not only under the heading of its main title. But also under such other headings as its contents seemed to justify. Some books will be found indexed under as many as from ten to fifteen subject-heads. By the use of the full line for each entry, the com piler has been enabled to give the titles at greater length than those in previous Indexes, thus showing the reader at a glance the character and scope of the various works under each head. Except in a few cases, the reference is to the latest edition only, but where a work has been published in more countries than one, the latest edition in each is indexed.

The unusual plan of chronological arrangement of the books under each head has been adopted, rather than the alphabetical arrangement, according to authors, found in other Indexes. The latter serves no very useful purpose, whereas the chronological order gives the reader at once that which he most frequently seeks, information as to the latest work on the subject of his research.

A Table of the Abbreviations in common use in law follows the Subject Index.
