Excerpt from Story of the Records D. A. R
One word about the authors and their claims to credi bility. The Story of the Records is the collaboration of two vigorous and well-known writers of Washington, D. C., both of whom are Charter members Of the National Society: both signers on the day of organization, October 11, 1890. One of them, Mrs. Mary S. Lockwood, Hon orary Vice President General for life, was the first His torian General Of the Society, and has had Official relation with the Board of Management in some capacity ever since, and was the one to whom was awarded a special Service Medal, than which, in the estimation of mankind, there can be no greater public recognition. At the time of the organization of this society Mrs. Lockwood was a member of the Board of Lady Managers Of the Worlds Columbian Exposition, through the recommendation of President Benjamin Harrison. She is author Of Historic Homes Of Washington and Hand Book of Ceramic Art. The other, Mrs. Emily Lee Sherwood Ragan, is the author Of a Washington story, Willis Peyton's Inheritance, favor ably known in the literary circles of the Capital City, where she also for several years was engaged in journalism. She it was, who gave the first intimation of the Society's exist ence to the Press, and was appointed as the Official Cor respondent Of the organization for over a year of that initial period. This Story of the Records is the first complete history Of the D. A. R. Society ever offered to the public, and it must become the Reference book for all future Society Historians. Therefore; for these, and many other reasons, the Publishers feel justified in making un usual claims for the merit of the forthcoming book.
