Excerpt from A Bug's-Eye View of the War
Lest it be forgotten, here is your record, set up in imperishable type - alms for oblivion. Changing points of view and lack of con temporaneous records have made it imperfect in many ways; but Memory has been a friend. I aim to suggest, rather than narrate, and perhaps the incidents that have been omitted will be recalled by their associations in these pages.
It is called a bug's-eye view of the war because in reality that was our viewpoint. Food and sleep and work were our chief concerns, Mr. Wil son's speeches to the contrary, notwithstanding. If at any time we were crusaders, our objective was a ration dump; and nearly all of us felt that our obligations to Old Man La Fayette were discharged along with our food on the transport going over. Communiques and the progress of war loans seldom excited our interest, if at all. This is not an indictment of our patriotism, for we decided upon the purposes of the war long before we enlisted.
