Excerpt from Three Lectures on Liberal Education
Europe are, and who are desirous of proceeding to the interior of literature, the method of commenting, which has been stated, is most profitable, and, I pre sume, most acceptable. And this is the method, which I should prefer to follow, as far as I could, as most useful in itself, and most c'onducive to learning; and most agreeable to my habits of study, and to my predilection. But in the immature state of our schools and colleges, and republic of letters, and under the prevalent influence of public opinion, I doubt whether it would be most acceptable, or even most profitable; and think it would be more advisable to endeavour to collect and communicate some more general informa tion orobservation. Yet it may be done with those, who are desirous of learning.
