Excerpt from The Compromises of Life and Other Lectures and Addresses: Including Some Observations on Certain Downward Tendencies of Modern Society
In issuing this volume of Lectures and Addresses the publishers are induced by many considerations to believe that they meet a requisition of the reading pub lic. Few writers in the last three decades have been more noted, few speakers heard by larger audiences, than the editor of the Louisville courier-journal. As the successor of Prentice, he carried forward the work of that eminent and brilliant man to yet further achievement; succeeding, before he was thirty years of age, in combining the newspapers of the Kentucky metropolis and in creating out of the union a journal of national influence and celebrity.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book brings together widely read speeches and lectures from the editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal, Henry Watterson. Delivered at various times over almost 30 years, the selections address contemporary political issues of the day, particularly the author's strong support of the Democratic party and his dedicated advocacy for civil rights during a time of intense division within the US. Topics covered range from the compromises achieved during the Civil War and Reconstruction era to the author's appeal for greater tolerance and understanding during a period of heightened political and social unrest. While the language and subject matter may at times reflect the partisan political nature of the era in which the speeches were delivered, the author's insights into the themes of national unity, equity, and progress resonate then as they do today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
