While he refolved to go in perfon to France, Spain ands/portugal, he fent his brother Bartholomew to England; which nation had now feen an end of her bloody civil wars, and begun to encourage trade and naviganon. But Bartholomew, in his pafl'age, was unfortunately taken by pirates, and robbed of all he had; and, -to augment his diltrefs, was feized with a fever after his arrival, and reduced to great hardlhips. After his recovery, he fpent fome time in drawing charts and maps, and felling them, before he was in a condition to appear at court. At length, bemg intro duccd to the king, he laid before him. His brother's propofals for failing to the weft on a voyage of difco very. King Henry, who was rather a prudent mana ger of the public treafure, than an encourager of great undertakings, as fome hiftorians fay, rejected his pro pofals: but others of equal credit affirm, that the king entered into an agreement wub Bartholomew, and (mi: him to invite his brother to England and that the nanon 1n general were fond of the proieft, either from motives of mere curiofity or profpet'fts of commercial advantage.
