Excerpt from Defence of the Rockingham Party: In Their Late Coalition With the Right Honourable Frederic Lord North
At a time like this, when the attention of mankind has been kept alii'e by a feries of the mod important'events, we ecafe to admire at things which would: otherwife appear uncommon, and v'mon ders almofi lofe their name; Even now, however, when men were almofi grown callous to novelty, and the youngeft of us had, like Cato in the play, lived'long enough to be furprifed at nothing, a matter has occurred which few expeéted;and to which, for that reafon, men of no great firength of mind, of no nerve of political feeling, fcarcely know how to reconcile themfelves. I refer to the coalition between the friends of the late marquis of Rockingham and the noble commoner in the blue ribbon.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is an impassioned defense of the recently formed political coalition between Charles James Fox and his Whig followers with the followers of the late Lord Rockingham. The author argues that this coalition is the only viable political group capable of reforming the government, which has long since abandoned its commitment to the people. The author argues that the only other party capable of leading the country, the followers of Lord Shelburne, is untrustworthy and would be disastrous if given power. The author's defense of this coalition is insightful and well-argued, making this book essential reading for anyone interested in British politics at the end of the 18th century.
