Sinossi

Excerpt from The Conventionalists

Since leaving the Euston Road I had not seen more than a dozen persons all told, and of these not less than four had been policemen. Five more had been working men, bag on shoulder, passing briskly along to some mysterious business, scenting the air for a hundred yards behind them with pungent black tobacco and that strange British combination of stale alcohol and unwashed clothes. One had been a drowsy boy, protruding a stick-like arm to take in the milk at a green-painted, blistered door; one had been a girl with her hair in curl-papers who appeared to have slept in her clothes; and the last a railway porter driving a van. I had also had a few courteous words with a sleepy but polite collie-dog.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate world of English upper-class society in the early 20th century, offering a captivating glimpse into the lives of a family living amidst landed gentry and country pursuits. The author masterfully captures the nuances of social interactions, class dynamics, and the complexities of human relationships through the lens of a weekend house party at Crowston, a sprawling estate in the English countryside. The story centers around the Banister family, whose lives are governed by traditions, expectations, and a rigid adherence to social convention. Algy, a young man returning from London, becomes a catalyst for disruption, his romantic idealism and unconventional ways clashing with the established order. The author explores the tension between tradition and individual desire, contrasting Algy's yearning for authentic connection with the shallowness and complacency of the established social circle. Through sharp wit and keen observation, the author unveils the underlying anxieties, desires, and unspoken truths that simmer beneath the surface of polite society. The novel examines the pressures of social conformity and the complexities of love and relationships, offering a timeless commentary on the human need for connection in a world where appearances often overshadow genuine human experience. The novel is a richly textured exploration of English society and the timeless struggle between individual freedom and social expectation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
