Excerpt from The Princess Mathilde Bonaparte
It would be easy to collect the homages of other literary men, and indeed we shall hear some of them later on. But perhaps, for the moment, we have had enough. One tribute from a woman may be added, which is the more valuable, seeing that it comes from the pen of the Princess Caroline Murat, in whose mouth compliments are few.1 Writing of her kins woman at the age of about twenty-nine, she says: She must have been uncommonly beauti ful in her young womanhood; she was still very handsome when I knew her first, and she always remained a woman of distinguished presence.
