Excerpt from The Commandments: Considered as Instruments of National Reformation
This little work was written before I had any expectation of the honour Which the University of Cambridge has done me, in appointing me to its Chair of Moral Philo sophy; before I had even a dream of seeking for that honour. It is simply a book of prae tical morality and divinity, and has not the least of a scientific character. But I am not sorry that it should go forth as a Witness that I desire, in Whatever task I am engaged, to keep the interests of practical morality and divinity in sight, as paramount to all others.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the enduring significance of the Ten Commandments, tracing their historical and spiritual impact from ancient Jewish origins to their relevance in contemporary society. The author contends that the Commandments, far from being Judaical relics, embody timeless principles of national morality and civil freedom, protecting against the assumptions of both Presbyteral and Prelatical establishments, as well as the encroachments of materialist and secular values. The book examines each Commandment in turn, revealing how their observance has fostered national unity, individual liberty, and the fear of God â" a recognition of His unseen presence and authority â" that has been the foundation of social order and human flourishing. Thought-provoking and insightful, this book offers a fresh perspective on the Commandments, demonstrating their enduring importance as guardians of our moral compass and the wellspring of national prosperity.
