Excerpt from Lectures on the Diseases of the Nervous System: Delivered at La Salpètrière
Although but recently published in Paris, the Lec tures of Professor Charcot on Diseases of the Nervous System have already taken a place amongst the classic works of medical literature, and been translated into several Continental languages. When preparing for the following version, it was judged best to await the appearance of the second French edition; thus the reader, in exchange for some delay, has been enabled to obtain the work in its most correct form, enlarged by about one-sixth. It was found inconvenient to repro duce the ten plates appended to the French volume.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate relationship between the nervous system and the body's nutritional processes, a topic that captivated medical minds in the late 19th century. It meticulously explores how lesions or disruptions within the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves can trigger a cascade of nutritional disturbances throughout the body. The author skillfully navigates the reader through the complexities of this subject, drawing upon meticulous observations of patients at the renowned Salpêtriàre Hospital in Paris, a hub of neurological study during that era. Through detailed case studies and insightful analyses, the book unveils the diverse ways in which nerve damage can manifest in the skin, muscles, joints, and even internal organs. The exploration extends beyond mere descriptions of these conditions, delving into their diagnostic significance and prognostic implications. The book challenges the prevailing physiological understanding of the time by demonstrating that the nervous system, once thought to have minimal influence on nutrition, plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's delicate balance. By illuminating the connection between nerve function and nutritional health, this work offers profound insights into the intricate mechanisms governing the human body and underscores the far-reaching consequences of neurological impairments.
