Excerpt from Course of Experiments in Physical Measurement, Vol. 4 of 4: Appendix for the Use of Teachers
The first requisite for a course in elementary Phys ical Measurement is a well lighted and uniformly heated room, with the ordinary precautions to secure good ventilation. Experience has shown that these advantages cannot practically be obtained in base ments, however suitable the latter may be for certain scientific purposes. The first floor of a building, prop erly supported by brick pillars to prevent vibration, has undoubted advantages for a course of measure ments. The use of iron in construction should be in so far as possible avoided on account of its magnetic influence.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a complete guide for teaching physical measurement, with the goal of developing scientific judgment in order to gather and analyze data accurately. The author advocates for a lecture and laboratory-based approach to augment textbooks. Rather than focus on new knowledge, the author posits that fostering a "sense of ownership" by assigning dedicated lab space to each student cultivates greater interest, which leads to better preservation of instruments and enhanced learning outcomes. Laboratories should be well-lit, temperature-controlled, and equipped with safety features; specifically, laboratories should not be in the basement or near power lines. The book includes a list of 20 essential apparatus categories, along with an alphabetical listing of supplies and tools to facilitate procurement. An optional fee structure is suggested to ensure access to up-to-date equipment. This book is a necessary resource for instructors in the field of physical measurement seeking to enhance their curriculum and improve student outcomes.
