Excerpt from New Methods of Testing Explosives
Until about fifteen years ago black' powder and dynamite were almost the only explosives used in practical mining. The danger entailed by their use in workings where gas was met with, had, however, been generally recognised, and the admitted expediency of abolishing their employment in fiery mines or seams presently brought about a material change of affairs.
Today, the use Of gunpowder has almost entirely ceased in collieries troubled with gas, and even in quarries it has been largely abandoned. Dynamite has perhaps stood its ground rather better, but this material, too, has had to yield wherever pit-gas or dangerous quantities Of coal-dust abounded, both in fact being almost universally superseded nowadays by so-called safety explosives.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores new methods for testing explosives, focusing on their safety and efficiency, particularly in the presence of firedamp in mines. The author provides a detailed account of the research and development of these methods, including the design and use of specialized apparatus for gauging the effects of various explosives. The book discusses the phenomena and influences that contribute to the ignition of firedamp by explosives, and how these factors can be measured and controlled. It presents a comprehensive analysis of the properties of different types of explosives, including their chemical composition, detonation speeds, pressure development, and flame characteristics. The author also examines the relationship between these properties and the safety and effectiveness of the explosives. The book provides valuable insights into the science of explosives and their practical applications, and offers a deeper understanding of the factors that determine their safety and efficiency in mining operations.
