Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This 1856 book, by founding Boston Public Library Trustee Nathaniel Shurtleff, describes a revolutionary system for organizing and managing major reference and circulating libraries. Due to Shurtleffâs foresight, the core features of his system, notably his decimal system and fixed shelving, were adopted as standard practice at the Boston Public Library and shaped the blueprint for many modern libraries. Shurtleffâs system prioritized easy access and retrieval of books with the help of a consistent and intuitive item numbering system and standardized shelving in combination with an easily navigable catalog system to provide researchers with the utmost ease of research. The system's emphasis on creating a logical, orderly, and accessible library reflects a significant shift in librarianship during the 19th century. This book provides an in-depth look at the challenges faced by early librarians and offers a glimpse into the history of the modern library, making this volume a valuable resource for library historians and library professionals.
