Excerpt from Computer Usage in Puerto Rico 1974
The usage of computers in Puerto Rico has followed a remarkably rapid path of ascension both in the volumes and sophistication of the users organization and the skill levels of the data processing professionals. With approximately 300 computers installed in the country today, some basic statistics illustrate its relative position within the international data processing community. Working with afips data (rpfl) by the end of 1071 France had about 41 computers per billion dollars of gnp, West Germany had 36 and Italy 34. Using a conservative figure for the end of 1973, Puerto Rico counted with over 43 computers per billion dollars of gnp. Similarly, using the same time frames, Puerto Rico had slightly over 90 computers installed for every million people in the country, while Italy had about 63. At the same time, the highest ratio of any country within the Latin American sphere was Venezuela with slightly over 30. It becomes evident that Puerto Rico's situation in this area, as in many others due to its special relationship with the United States, and the present dynamism of its economy has created a situation of tremendous potential within the DP industry. This needs to be studied carefully to insure that the most is made of these vital skills and equipment to aid in the socio-economic development of the Island. In addition, it can serve as a much needed model to guide other developing lands in the application of computer.
