Excerpt from A Framework for Including the Value of Time in Design-for-Manufacturing Decision Making
Examples of design rules are: minimize the number of discrete parts in the design, minimize the number of unique part numbers in the design, eliminate adjustments at final assembly and eliminate fasteners [baetz87, Trucks87]. Some of the rules are more narrowly focused on part features and may, for example, specify that holes punched in sheet metal parts should be located at least two hole diameters away from the edge of a part. The rules are a codification of production expertise into a concise form and are easy to communicate. There is significant anecdotal evidence that the use of these guidelines is effective in producing low-cost and high-quality designs [gager86].

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a re-evaluation of the widely accepted principles of Design for Manufacturing (DFM). The author claims that the current DFM methods are inadequate when short product development time is a priority for a company, and that under these circumstances, companies should adopt different product design tactics. Based on field research, the book introduces a new design heuristic to minimize the development lead time of products manufactured in high-volume processes. The author argues that simplifying the most complex part in a product, rather than across the board simplification, is more effective in reducing tooling and procurement times and, consequently, overall development time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Codice articolo 9781332261680_0
