Il ne s'agit pas de chercher dans le Poème de la Nature une règle et une foi. Trop de personnes estiment qu'un livre n'est bon que s'il présente une doctrine toute faite qu'on peut revêtir comme un habit. On ne trouve pas chez Lucrèce la vérité, mais des vérités, avec beaucoup d'erreurs qu'il est utile de connaître et de démêler. Le grand profit d'une étude philosophique, c'est l'étude même. Si on ne rencontre pas le trésor espéré, on s'enrichit en le cherchant. C'est le cas de rappeler la leçon que le laboureur de La Fontaine donna à ses enfants.
