Excerpt from The Disadvantages of Being Good, and Other Lapses
One of the rhymes was first printed anony mously on the West Newton Church Calendar. A few months after, the writer received a paper containing it from California, from a friend who not knowing he was the author thought the lines would please him, then a new hymn-book with the verse as foreword. And a year after a travelling salesman called to try and sell him copies of the verse printed on cards for distribution; such is anonymity!

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the relative advantages and disadvantages of being a 'good' person. The author argues that the common view that goodness is always better than naughtiness is simplistic and unrealistic. He proposes that adults should learn to appreciate the advantages of both, since these qualities are present in all of us as natural, inseparable characteristics. Both 'bad' and 'good' qualities can be helpful or harmful depending on the life situation in which they occur. Instead of attempting to suppress all 'bad' behavior, we should strive to control our 'bad' qualities in order to allow the 'good' qualities to shine through. Perfectly eradicating 'bad' qualities is impossible and undesirable. This thought-provoking read may change your perspective on not only morality, but also on childhood and adulthood.
