The scope originally laid down by Dr. Worcester has been somewhat enlarged, to allow of the admission of certain of the technical terms which - the vast enterprise of the United States has made almost household words.
With respect to orthography, the purpose has been to give that which is supported by the best usage. Innova tions which have no sanction from the prevailing and best usage of the English-speaking countries have been avoided as corruptions of the language. Certain minor inevitable changes have, of course, been necessitated by the evolution of the language.
