Excerpt from An Introduction to the Elements of Algebra

Some opinion may be formed of the adapta tion of this treatise to learners, from the cir cumstances under which it was composed. It was undertaken after the author became blind, and was dictated to a young man entirelylwith out education, 'who by this means became an expert algebraist, and was able to render the author important services as an amanuensis. It was written originally in Germany It has since been translated into Russian, French, and English, with notes and additions. The entire work, consists Of two volumes octavo, and contains many things intended for the professed mathematician, rather than the general student. It' was thought that a selec tion of such parts as would form an easy intro duction'to the science would be well received, and tend to promote a taste for analysis among the highe'r'class of students, and to raise the character of mathematical learning.
