Excerpt from General Principles of the Method of Least Squares: With Applications
In order that this curve may represent exactly the distri bution of the errors in any given series of observations it ought to meet the axis of X at some definite distance to the right and left of the origin and coincide with the axis from there on, for in all actual observations there is a limit beyond which no errors occur. But as the exact point of meeting could not be determined for any given case, and as it would not be possible to obtain the equation of such a curve, we make it asymptotic to the axis of. X, taking care that the error thus introduced shall in any set of observations be so small as to be negligible.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the theory and practical applications of the Method of Least Squares, a powerful statistical tool used to determine the most probable values of unknown quantities based on a series of observations. This method is widely used in various fields, including surveying, astronomy, physics, engineering, and many more. The author presents the fundamental principles of the method, including the concept of errors, the derivation of the equation of the curve of error, and the adjustment of observations. The book also covers advanced topics such as the precision of observations, conditioned observations, and the comparison of the reliability of different measurements. By exploring these concepts, the author demonstrates how the Method of Least Squares can significantly enhance the accuracy and precision of scientific measurements and observations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
