Excerpt from History of Pembroke, N. H., 1730-1895, Vol. 1 of 2: Historical
T he loss of the town's records for the first eight years after the incorpora tion renders the account of those years necessarily incomplete. Other circum stances also increase the incompleteness. It is greatly to be regretted that we' have so little information of many of the men who played a prominent part in the early history of the town.
For the chapter on Pembroke in the Revolution, besides the town records, we have gleaned from the Revolutionary Rolls of the New Hampshire State Papers, and all other known accessible sources.

This book delves into the captivating history of a New England town, intricately woven with the tales of its early settlers and their struggles against adversity. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the 18th century, a period marked by conflict and tension between English colonists and Native American tribes, further fueled by the rivalry between the English and French for control of the region. The author meticulously traces the town's origins, beginning with the granting of land by the Massachusetts Bay Colony to the survivors and heirs of Captain John Lovewell's company. Lovewell, a renowned Indian fighter, played a pivotal role in defending the frontier against raids, and his legacy is deeply intertwined with the town's identity. The book vividly recounts Lovewell's expeditions, including the famed Battle of Pigwacket, offering a glimpse into the harsh realities of life on the edge of the wilderness. Beyond the thrilling accounts of frontier warfare, the book explores the broader themes of community building, resilience, and the enduring human spirit. It delves into the challenges faced by the early settlers, including disease, isolation, and the constant threat of attack.
