Excerpt from Memorial Notices and Addresses on the Character and Public Services of Samuel Buell Woolworth, LL. D
It is now more than twenty-four years since I entered the service of the Board as its Secretary and Treasurer.
I have been unremitting in the work committed to me to the full extent of my ability, and the Board has always given me full and cordial support and confidence. Today I find among you but one person a member of the Board of Regents at the time Of my elect-ion.
It gives me inexpressible pleasure to state that all our consulta tions and discussions have been harmonious, and our decisions have had entire concurrence.
The duties of Secretary and Treasurer are very important and de mand constant care and attention.

This book is a collection of documents and letters regarding the life, work, and legacy of Dr. Samuel Buell Woolworth, a prominent figure in New York's educational system from 1822 to 1880. The material draws from various sources including Regents' meeting minutes, letters from students and colleagues, and funeral orations. The contents explore Woolworth's work as academy principal and his key role in the development of the New York State Normal School system and state-wide teacher certification. The author also illuminates Woolworth's service from 1856 until his death in 1880 as Secretary of the Regents of the University of the State of New York, where he helped create the University Convocation and establish a uniform system of examinations for secondary schools.
