Sinossi

Excerpt from The Evolution of Man, Vol. 1: A Popular Scientific Study; Human Embryology or Ontogeny

When the first edition of this work appeared in 1874, and the third edition followed three years afterwards, the circum stances of biology were very different from what they are to-day. It is true that the struggle for the recognition of the great truths of science, which Darwin had initiated by the publication of his epoch-making work in 1859, had already been decided in his favour on the main issue. But the most important consequence of the new evolutionary doctrine (now firmly established for the first time through his theory of selection) - that is to say, its application to man - still met with the most spirited and widespread opposition.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating and intricate world of human development, revealing the fascinating story of how we came to be. The author explores the profound connection between the stages of an individual's embryonic growth (ontogeny) and the evolutionary history of our species (phylogeny). This groundbreaking work was a pioneer in its field when it was first published, challenging traditional scientific thought by proposing that the development of a human embryo mirrors the evolution of our ancestors over millions of years. The bookââ â¢s central argument is grounded in the fundamental law of biogeny: ââ Å"Ontogeny is a recapitulation of phylogeny.ââ  This groundbreaking concept explains why human embryos, during their development, exhibit features reminiscent of earlier animal forms, such as fish and amphibians. By carefully examining these embryonic stages, the author unveils a remarkable blueprint of human ancestry, tracing our lineage back through a series of evolutionary transformations. Through this exploration, the author sheds light on the complex interplay of heredity and adaptation that drive both individual development and the evolution of species, ultimately offering a compelling perspective on the intricate and interconnected history of life on Earth. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Codice articolo 9781333276812_0
