MY theme is the growth of the American Union during the colonial era of our history. In treating such a subject, it is my desire to say, in the first place, that I shall purposely forbear speaking of the Union as it now exists, with its manifold and countless blessings, its present estate, and its prospects. It is the retrospect which I intend to turn to; and in that retrospect there is abundance both of admonition and eu couragement for all after-time, much to inspire a thoughtful loyalty to the Union, and a deep sense of responsibility for each generation com ing to live within that Union and to transmit it unimpaired to posterity, such as it has grown to be, not by man's will or sagacity, but by the providential government of the world.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the development of the American Union during the colonial era, demonstrating that the unification of the colonies originated in the Providential processes that created the nation and was not solely a product of human design. The author analyzes the impact of Saxon self-government, colonial establishment patterns, and the resistance to centralized control in shaping the foundations of the Union. The book further explores the role of individual figures, colonial events, and geographical features in fostering both the need for and the impediments to unity. It examines how the diversity of the colonial governments, the influence of religious affiliations, and the physical characteristics of the continent played a part in shaping the nascent Union. Through a comprehensive analysis of historical events, the author argues that the Union's development was a gradual and complex process, guided by a higher purpose, rather than a predetermined plan. The book concludes that the Union's origin can be traced to the unique interplay of human agency and divine providence, providing a valuable historical perspective on the enduring strength of the American nation.
