Sinossi

Excerpt from The Positive School of Criminology: Three Lectures Given at the University of Naples, Italy on April 22, 23 and 24, 1901

Pation, I received an invitation, several months ago, from several hundred students of this famous university, to give them a brief summary, in short special lectures, of the principal and fundamental conclusions of criminal sociology, I gladly accepted, because this invitation fell in with two ideals of mine. These two ideals are stirring my heart and are the secret of my life. In the first place, this invitation chimed with the ideal of my personal life, namely, to diffuse and propa gate among my brothers the scientific ideas, which my brain has accumulated, not through any merit of mine, but thanks to the lucky prize inherited from my mother in the lot.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. In this groundbreaking work, the author establishes a new direction in criminology, challenging the traditional focus on punishment and retribution. They argue that to effectively address crime, we must first understand the criminal, their motivations, and the conditions that contribute to their actions. This book lays the foundation for a "positive" criminology, one based on scientific observation and analysis rather than abstract theories. The author traces the historical evolution of criminological thought, from its origins in the Enlightenment to its modern iterations, and situates their own research within this broader context. They explore the relationship between crime and social and economic factors, challenging the notion of the "rational criminal" and emphasizing the importance of understanding the individual circumstances that shape criminal behavior. Ultimately, this book offers a transformative perspective on the nature of crime and punishment, urging readers to consider the complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociological factors that contribute to criminal behavior, and to rethink our approach to criminal justice.
