As to the kinds of knowledge which a minister should rultivate, they ought undoubtedly to be principally pro fessional; and in this class are included subjects of suffi cient compass and importance, to occupy the most de voted attention and comprehensive talents. But among professional subjects, there is ground of preference. Some are intrinsically more important than others; and some become especially important on account of the pe. Culiar character of the age, or state of the church. On the ground of intrinsic value, and peculiar adaptation to the circumstances of the candidates for the Ministry of the present day, there is no department of knowledge which more imperiously demands their attention, than the original languages 01? The sacred scriptures.
