Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of Molière, Vol. 1: Rendered Into English
It is always difficult to state when a playwright has taken from any other author, for the saying, yo proud: mon oz'on partout ou jo lo from/o, has covered, and still covers, a multitude of literary sins. More over, Moliere possessed a power of absorption and assimilation which enabled him so to vivify the ma terials he borrowed that they became new creations of incomparable value. In this sense, to take an idea or a mere thought from another author can hardly be called an imitation; and though Moliere, in his first two or three plays, translated several scenes from Italian authors, he has scarcely ever done so in his latter pieces. To mention which of his comedies I consider, or rather which are generally thought, the best, would be difficult, where everything is so emi nent; for in all his plays characters will be found which demonstrate his thorough knowledge of human nature, and display his genius. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a new translation of all Moliere's plays. The author has attempted to preserve the genuine spirit, and a faithful and literal translation in prose, conveying ideas and characters as clearly as possible. Moliere's plays are divided into six groups: small dramatic poems or pastorals, farces, comedies, critical short pieces, those with a particular focus, and early attempts. They display humanity in all its aspects, capturing vice and folly with all necessary consequences. Moliere often satirizes hypocrites, quacks, affectation of learning amongst ladies, and snobbishness. Through concise critical judgments, the book analyzes character portrayals within each play. It places Moliere's work within its historical context, examining his influence and contemporaries. The author explores Moliere's incisive expression and clear thought, demonstrating his unique command of language.
