Excerpt from Lavinia, Vol. 1 of 2
It was not easy to determine at once to what country he belonged. So far as his style of dress, his pale countenance, and his unshaven beard (scanty, it must be owned) were concerned, he might have been taken for one born on the Continent; but there was {in his carriage, in his bearing, in the whole habit of his body, an individuality, a touch of raciness and originality, suz generis, which rarely falls to the lot of Continental people. The soundest conjecture seemed to be that he was a native of Great Britain, who had lived long abroad. At least, the way he held out his hand, and the hearty squeeze he gave to that of the young painter, were unmistakeably English. Had they invented nothing but this shaking hands, the English would still be a great people.
