Excerpt from Ridpath`s History of the World, Vol. 5 of 5: Being an Account of the Principal Events in the Career of the Human Race From the Beginnings of Civilization to the Present Time, Comprising the Development of Social Institutions and the Story of All Nations From Recent and Authentic Sources
In the succeeding chapter, the history of Great Britain will be given in like manner, from the period of political stagnation after the failure of the first Home Rule Bill to the rush made by the empire after the Chinese spoils in 1898 - 99. Subsequently, the history of France, of Germany, of Italy, Spain, Por tugal, Russia, Turkey, the Oriental nations, Australia, and the Minor American Republics, will be considered in their turn, with as much fullness as the limits of the volume will permit. The object, in a word, is to make a fairly com prehensive narrative of the course of events in all the leading nations during the closing pe riod of the century. The author delivers the completed work to the public with an expres sion of thanks for the favor with which his Universal History has been hitherto received, and with the hope that the present additional volume may be found as acceptable as its predecessors. Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is the last in a multi-volume history of the world, covering every major civilization from the dawn of man to the end of the 19th century. In this volume, the author chronicles the history of nations in both hemispheres from the beginning of the last decade of the 19th century to its end. These accounts include the election of Benjamin Harrison, the McKinley Tariff, the Spanish-American War, and the rise of Imperialism in the United States as well as detailed histories of Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, and other nations. The author's approach to this era is through the lens of the significant shift in human civilization that occurred around the turn of the century. Technological and social innovations, such as the automobile and women's suffrage, along with the growing interconnectedness of the world, helped to usher society from one historical epoch to another. At the same time, serious problems such as the growth of labor unrest and the increasing militarism of nations were also defining issues of the time. This volume is important for its exploration of the complex transition from the 19th to the 20th century, providing an in-depth look at a time that set the stage for many of the challenges and advancements of the modern world.
