Wicklifi's and Tyndal'sitranflations, and 011 that ground objeéted to the ufe of them but on the other hand it was contended by the friends of the reformation, that if thefe tranflations were erro neous, care Ihould be ta ken to publith one more faithful. In the year 1535, Cranmer, who had been advanced to the' fee Of Canterbury two years before', and whofe endeavours to promote the caufe Of the reformation were unremitted, had fufhcient intereft to procure a petition from both houfes of convocation to the king, requefi ing that he would allow a new tranflation of the Scriptures to be made. Henry confented and Cranmer, dividing an Old Englifh tranflation of the New Tefiament into nine or ten parts, dif tributed them among the moit learned biihops and others, requiring that they fhould return their refpeétive portions, correéted and amended, by a certain day._ Every one fent his part at the time appomted, except Stokefly, bifhop of London, Bible to be read in any vulgar tongue; fori never yet heard any reafon laid, why it were not convenient to have the Bible tranflated into the Eng] ith tongue Such 15 the teflimony of thi S great man and profe'fled papift, upon the general queftion of the right and expediency of a tianflation of the scriptures, although he did every thing in his power to fupprefs the tranflations which were ac tually made.
