The method which'i have followed throughout in the text, in nomenclature, order, and treatment, is that which Professor Barrett Wendell of Harvard Col lege has developed in the course of his teaching there, and by which, as his pupil, his assistant, and his friend, I have for seven years profited. In his English Composition (charles Scribner's Sons, both teacher and pupil will find the principles of rhetoric stated and expounded with a clearness and brilliancy which I have not found elsewhere.
The exercises, and to some extent the text, have been carefully revised in the Fifth Edition.
