Excerpt from Spruce Street Lectures: Lecture IV. Delivered on the Evening of the 22d January, 1832; Of Church Discipline
The present distracted state Of the Presbyterian Church is owing, in a great degree, to the facility with which men of almost every shade Of Opinion have been admitted to preach among us. Some Presbyteries, it is said, have dis pensed with the Constitutional questions required to be proposed to every candidate at his ordination; and others have not considered opinions, the most remote from our standards, a sufficient cause for rejection. Perhaps I may say with truth, that none have been duly alert in guarding the entrance to the holy ministry. We are now suffering the deplorable consequences of such unconstitutional and culpable remissness.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. Within this book, the author argues the Presbyterian Church must not passively allow doctrinal error to weaken its authority. Beginning with a scriptural examination of church discipline, the author demonstrates from the biblical text why and how the Presbyterian Church should ordain and exercise standards for exclusion and discipline of unworthy, ignorant, or inappropriate members. These standards were historically established in Presbyterianism to ensure sound doctrine is taught and received and to prevent the spread of heresy that could lead to further decay and dissolution of the Presbyterian Church. The author argues that the implementation of church discipline can correct the wrongs of wayward members and restore them to the beneficial fellowship and standards of the Church. This book is a must-read for any Presbyterian who seeks to maintain the authority and purity of their denomination.
