Excerpt from Notes on Finite Differences: For the Use of Students of the Institute of Actuaries
I. As the following short account of some of the more elementary theorems of Finite Differences is intended for the use of students who have no acquaintance with the methods of analytical geometry, it seems desirable to preface it by a short explanation of the method of representing variable quantities by curved lines or diagrams.

For most tabulated functions, successive orders of differences rapidly diminish, making this book useful for calculating isolated points on a curve or approximating unknown values of a function. The author presents general expressions for functions based on equidistant values as well as methods for supplying missing equidistant values, with solved examples illustrating each method. The book then explores interpolation formulas including Lagrange's, Stirling's, and the author's own formula, comparing their results and discussing their applications. Though the author assumes readers have no knowledge of analytical geometry, they should be familiar with the methods of algebra. This book on finite differences is a valuable resource for students or anyone working in a field that uses functions.
