Excerpt from Deductions Suggested by the Geographical Distribution of Some Post-Columbian Words Used by the Indians of S. America
In this volume I have collected the words used by 8. American Indians for certain cultural elements that were introduced into America at the time of, or shortly after, the Discovery, and for which the appellations are known to us from a considerable number of Indian languages. To render the work more lucid I have mapped out these words in such a' way that they appear on the maps at the places where they were recorded?) The maps give the words used by various Indian tribes for the domestic fowl, the horse, the cow, the banana, fire - arms, and scissors, which cultural elements were quite strange to the Indians at the time of the Discovery; as well as for the partly new cultural ele ments, the knife, the needle, and the fish-hook.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of post-Columbian South America, tracing the spread of cultural elements introduced by Europeans to the indigenous populations. The author examines how the arrival of domestic fowls, horses, cattle, and bananas transformed the lives of Native Americans, and how these new items were assimilated into their cultures. Focusing on the vocabulary used by different tribes to describe these newly encountered things, the author sheds light on the complex patterns of trade and migration that existed across the continent. By comparing names for these items with historical accounts of early explorers and colonizers, the author unravels the geographical routes along which European cultural influences spread. Through meticulous analysis of linguistic data, the author unveils hidden connections between seemingly unrelated tribes and reveals the enduring impact of the Columbian Exchange on the social fabric of South America.
