Excerpt from A Course of Questions in Geography, Combining Mathematical, Descriptive, Political, and Physical: Carefully Compiled to Embrace an Outline of Study for Common and Grammar Schools
The advantages of the use of such Questions - wholly separated from any corresponding text - as are here for the first time presented, are obvious. They suggest in a small compass, all the really essential details for a full knowledge of Geography, so far as it can be expected to be learned in ordinary schools. They will, in the hands of the student, serve as a guide to the preparation of his daily lesson they will arouse him to inquiry and investigation; and they will prove especially useful to him in general reviews. By being so entirely suggestive, separated from all set answers, they will preserve the advantage of definite questions, while they will avoid the mechan ical method into which the plan of set question and answer inevitably leads. A proper mastery of these questions will rather enable the scholar to build up a complete text-book of his own, than allow him, in a blind, unthinking manner, to follow the track of another. They thus combine the advantages of the oral method with the text book method, avoiding the evils which attach to each, by making every pupil, self-teaching.
