At first it had no such connexion. Men spoke on behalf of humanity, and of nothing else. The earliest meeting expressive of indignation against the Turks had Lord Shaftesbury as its President, and was attended by men of all political parties. It was not then, known what the action of the Cabinet had been, if, indeed, they had taken any.
